Question

Select a topic that can produce 10 page analytical report and write a research proposal on it. Research Proposal Instructions The major assignment for the semester is a research project on a subject of your choice. Make sure your topic represents a manageable scope, appropriate for a multi-week exploration of a subject of interest to you. After you decide on your topic, assemble a proposal requesting approval for your project. Present your research topic, including preliminary sources of information, plans for additional research or testing, an outline for the analytical report, and audience analysis. Define terms I will need to understand, and give me some context for the project.

A STUDY ON RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN LEARNING STYLES AND ACADEMIC ACHIEVEMENT OF UNDERGRADUATE STUDENTS

INTRODUCTION

Education continuously builds ideas emotions. The flux of human consciousness gives the process of education its distinctive character and makes teaching and learning such a wondrous, ever changing process as thoughts and feelings are built and rebuilt. The children come to school filled with experience stored in their memories including complex pattern of behavior that will be built in as they mature. We try to peer inside to find out what learning has taken place and what readiness there is from new learning. But teachers cannot crawl inside and look around we have to infer what is inside from what we can see and hear. Our educated guesses are the substance of our trade as we try, continually, to construct in our minds the pictures of the environment providing tasks, and building pictures of the minds of students making teaching- the continuous inquiry into mind and environment, provide tasks and try to learn what is going on in those wondrous and unique minds.

The concept of learning styles has a long history though the last century and has its roots in the easily pragmatist, philosopher William James and psychology of Carl Gusta Jun. Learning styles are the ways in which each person begins to concentrate on, process and retain new and difficult information through different perceptual channels. Learning styles pertain to the person as an individual and that differential him from someone else. The way in which an individual characteristically acquires, retains and retrieves information are collectively termed the individual’s learning style (Felder and Henriques, 1995). It is generally assumed that learning style refer to beliefs, preference and behavior used by individuals to aid their learning in a given situation (Brown, 2000).

Madhuri, (1988) has conducted a study of factors in pupil academic achievement on different streams of courses at the higher secondary stage. She found that the verbal intelligence, non-verb intelligence, intelligence and creativity were positively correlated with academic achievement. Socio-economic status and study habits were positively correlated with academic achievement.

In educational institutions, success is measured by academic performance or how well a student meets standards set by the educational institution. As a carrier competition grows ever fiercer in the working world, the importance of students doing well in schools has caught the attention of parents, legislations and government education departments alike.

Academic achievement is of paramount importance. It has been indicated that a good number of variables such as personality characteristics of the learners, the organizational climate of the school, curriculum planning, teaching-learning set up, variable arising out of home influence achievement in different degrees. Each of them is actually a cluster of variable which individually or on interaction with other have their influence on achievement. In short, we can say that both nature and nature play a combine role on making an achieving individual.

For the present study the academic achievement has been measured in terms of aggregate of marks percentage obtained in the school subjects.

STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

In the light of the discussions given in the preceding pages the researcher selected the problem for her research which is entitled:

“A STUDY ON RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN LEARNING STYLES AND ACADEMIC ACHIEVEMENT OF UNDERGRADUATE STUDENTS”

SIGNIFICANCE OF THE PROBLEM

Keeping in view present circumstances it has become all the more important to study that how people learn and how is that related to academic achievement of the aspiring candidates.

REVIEW OF THE RELATED LITERATURE

Studies of the related literature implies locating and evaluation reports of research as well as reports of causal Observation and opinion that are related to the individuals planned research project.

IMPORTANCE

The importance of related literature is as follows:

Osman Yil dirin (2008) et.al. Stated that there is debate about whether the leadership style of the teacher or the learning style of the students’ affects academic achievement more. A large sample (N=746) of eighth grade students in Istanbul, Turkey, participated in a study where it was assessed in terms of peoples orientation and task orientation. The learning styles examined were group individual, visual, auditory, tactile and kinesthetic. Multiple discriminate analyses indicated that teacher leadership style was the main factor affecting academic performance. No significant relationship was found between learning style and academic achievement.

Herman (2007) conducted research on the use of learning styles as a tool for curriculum and personality development. The main findings of the research re individual learning styles data provided a focus for discussion with personal development planning exercise with the PDD cohort. This structure and supported process helped student planning their personal, educational and career development. The main emphasis of the study was on raising awareness among the student of their aim preferences and to encourage a balanced development across the range of learning styles.

Phan (2007) conducted research on predicting change in epistemological beliefs, reflective thinking and learning styles: a longitudinal study. The result of the study showed that in a cross-lag model involving arts structural, structural equation modeling showed that epistemological beliefs influenced student learning approaches rather than the contrary. In the casual-mediating model involving mathematics students, the results indicate that both epistemological beliefs and academic performance. Furthermore leaning approaches mediated the effect of epistemological beliefs on reflective thinking and academic performance.

OBJECTIVES OF THE STUDY

HYPOTHESES THE STUDY

The following hypotheses have been formulated for the present research work:

OPERATIONAL DEFINITIONS OF THE KEY TERMS

RESEARCH DESIGN

Present research entitled, “A Study on Relationship between Learning Styles and Academic Achievement of Undergraduate Students” comes under the method of descriptive research.

Present research entitled, “A Study on Relationship between Learning Styles and Academic Achievement of Undergraduate Students” comes under the method of descriptive research.

Population of the Study

All the students who are presently enrolled in different streams of two comprise the population for the present investigation.

In the present research study, particular colleges (xyz) are selected in which 120 students will be taken for the sample. 120 students comprise 60 boys and 60 girls enrolled in different streams (40 each- 20 boys and 20 girls) will be taken for the sample.

As per the objectives of the present study, following tools will be used:

Learning style Inventory by Rita Dunn, Kenneth Dunn, Gray E. Price to assess the learning styles.

The learning style Inventory (LSI) developed by Dunn, Dunn and Price is a multidimensional instrument that denitrifies the conditions under which individual are more likely to learn. This is a self-reporting tool that assesses an individual’s preference for conditions of learning. According to the inventors, the preferences for different conditions comprise the learning styles. This inventory consists of 100 statements that are categorized as aspects and elements. Aspects and Elements of learning Style give the shape of a Questionnaire (LSQ). In this inventory 22 elements are classified under four aspects i.e.

(III.)   Sociological             (IV)     Physical

For academic achievement, last year examination will be considered and the marks/grades obtained by the students will be taken into consideration

In the present study the following statistical treatments viz; Mean, Standard Deviation t-test and correlation will be used to analyze the data.

DELIMITATIONS OF THE STUDY

Keeping in view the time available and limited resources, the study has been delimited as under:

TIME SCHEDULE

The present study will be taken up within xyz months of time.
