Explanation / Answer

Erikson's psychosocial theory of development

According to Erikson's theory, a normal healthy person undergoes 8 stages of development right from the birth to adulthood. These stages shape the personality by influencing the identity of the individual. An individual has to resolve 2 conflicting ideas at each of the stages. On the successful resolving of the conflict, the person is able to develop a certain virtue or belief which is helpful in subsequent stages of life. Following are the 8 stages of development with the respective conflicting ideas to be overcome and the belief generated as described by Erikson:

Trust vs Mistrust

When a child is born, the infant who is completely dependent; has to learn how to trust the adults around. The infant is uncertain about what is going to happen in the world. Baby trusts the reliable sensitive caregivers with a consistent care that gives them a feeling of being protected as opposed to the negligent caregivers who develop a mistrust in the infant's mind. This psychosocial crisis decides whether the baby has a positive or a negative outcome on his personality throughout the life. This is very crucial because the infants who develop mistrust are not able to trust anyone easily in their entire life since they lose the feeling of security right from their birth. This mistrust if developed leads to fear of insecurity and anxiety.
