Question
NAFTA During the 2016 presidential campaign, Mr. Trump frequently stated that the trade agreement called NAFTA was the worse trade deal ever for the USA, and he planned to repeal or re-negotiate this agreement What other countries are part of this trade agreement? What features of this agreement are considered negative for the US economy? Is there anything positive that NAFTA has brought to the US economy? Negotiations are underway currently to revise NAFTA. The talks are not going well according to observers, and on February 7, 2018, the prime minister of Canada announced that Canada would not continue to participate in NAFTA if the current negotiations lead to a nevw NAFTA that is bad for Canada. What seems to the be the biggest problems with the negotiations to revise NAFTA? What is Mexico's position on the current state of NAFTA negotiations?Explanation / Answer
NAFTA stands for North American Free Trade Agreement and it came into existence in 1994. It includes the three North American Countries, America, Canada and Mexico. This agreement relaxed the stringent rules on movement of goods, labour and services within these three countries.
With the new Trump administration in place, there is a trouble. It all started with the racial comments by Trump on Mexicans and his over enthusiastic patriotism which always ends in a trouble for other countries and even for the Americans. His administration wanted all the high paying jobs inside the United States and focus more on local interests.
NAFTA has equally benefitted the three nations in different fronts. US has got more agricultural products from Canada and more manpower from Mexico. Both Canada and Mexico are not interested in reshaping NAFTA and they are ready to disagree on many proposals that the US will bring on table in the name of reform or reshaping because any change that would address only the American interest would definitely harm the interests of the two countries.
