Karl Marx talks about the process of estrangement from conspecificsc which is owing to living in a society that is divided by class hierarchy. It is the given social stratas that lead to a alienating of one (the individual) from others (society).

We can see the alienation of labor, wherein Gustav eventually, while reading the newspaper, also mindlessly ends up tossing his work briefcase.

Alienation of worker we see him coming out of his workplace, only to see the bourgeosie people sitting and disposing of what he considers valuable.

Alienation from Species essence, when he gets a phone call, which could be assumed to be from a friend, he reacts violently to itiby slamming the phone down. Marx says that a person who does not seek for the mutual association and strays away from the psychological well being attained from interaction is alienated from his/her own species.

Alienation from self, is when we see him attempt suicide with hus tie, onlyoto fail.

According to me, Gustavs attempt can be classified as Fatalistic, as there is the presence of an oppressive discipline that hashbeen catering only to the bourgeoisie. That leaves himhno choice.
