Question
You're volunteering for a non-profit organization that takes old furniture, repairs it, sands it and polishes it that have historically been very inefficient at scheduling the projects. You remember something to complete both tasks. You have the following tasks (in minutes) scheduled for the afternoon. a. You know from the history files how long it will take for each individual project and task (sand, polish). Using Johnson's Rule, determine the correct project sequence. (7points) b. Using Johnson's Rule, what is the minimum time required (in minutes) to complete both tasks? (10 points) c. Based on your answer in part b. How much idle time will the polishing work center have? (3 points) Project sandpolish 4 4 10Explanation / Answer
Johnson’s Rule is:
Accordingly sequence of projects as follows :
A – B – G -C -E – F - D
The calculations as follows :
Sand : A ( 2) B ( 5 ) G ( 10) C ( 16) E ( 23) F ( 31) D ( 36)
Polish : A ( 6 ) B ( 9) G (17) C ( 20) E ( 29) F ( 41) D ( 45)
The numbers in parenthesis are the completion time of the relevant project in the relevant job
Thus :
Completion time of sanding operation = 36
Completion time of Polishing operation = 41
However, total duration of all projects in polishing activity = 4 + 3 + 3 + 4 + 6 + 10 + 7 = 37
Therefore , idle time the polishing workcenter will have = 41 – 37 = 4
POLISHING WORKCENTER WILL HAVE 4 UNITS OF IDLE TIME
POLISHING WORKCENTER WILL HAVE 4 UNITS OF IDLE TIME
