Sandeep and Antoine are very happy. They have just booked a weekend at a very grand hotel and are looking forward to spending the weekend there together. They arrive at the reception desk to check in and collect the keys to their room. So far so good and when they open the door to their room they just love it. Quickly they unpack and then change for dinner. Sandeep has some nice gold jewellery and Antoine a laptop which are placed in the safe in their room and locked. They also have some expensive clothes which they place in the closet. They leave for a nice meal. They find a nice restaurant and are enjoying a nice meal when disaster strikes as one of the waiting staff accidentally spills a glass of red wine over Sandeep’s expensive white dress. She is very upset but the owner just points to notices all over the restaurant which state that the management is not responsible for lost or stolen goods. On returning to their hotel, things do not get any better, much to their dismay they find that there has been a fire on their hotel floor and most of their clothes and personal belongings have been damaged. The hotel staff while a bit sympathetic point to a notice at the back of the reception desk in the left corner ,which states that the hotel accepts no responsibility for guests’ property that is damaged or lost. a. What is the name given to this kind of notice and what is the purpose of such a notice? b. In general how do the courts interpret such notices?

Besically, the term used for this kind of notice as ------------ Lost and Found Policy --------------------- .

Lets have a look over it. Safes are provided in every guest room and are to be used to store valuable items. However, the hotel is not liable for the theft, loss, damage or destruction of the property .

Procedure of Lost and Found Policy

1. After receiving of lost and found items from the guest rooms, the desk supervisor files all the details in lost and found register.

2.  The control supervisor should prepare the lost and found form in triple sheet, where he should write the details of the articles, like date time etc.

3. The article and the original copy of the form is stored in plastic bag and kept in lost and found cupboard .

4. Duplicate copy is send to the front office to obtain the data of the guest.

5. Third copy is retained in lost and found book .

6. The Executive- House-keeper obtains the forwarding address of the guest from the front office who have the information in the registration card. If the guest name is not known the housekeeping department has to wait for the guest claim.

7. If any inquiry about the article the control desk supervisor cross check with the register .

8. If desk control supervisor satisfy with the guest answer the lost articles has been issued to the concerned guest, and obtain the signature of the person collecting the articles .

9. If the guest does not claims the articles in spite of reminders the article is placed for a specific period of time as prescribed by the management , after that period the article is gifted to the finder .

  The purpose of this notice is to clarify campus protocol for handling lost and found items. This notice provides clear direction for the proper safeguards, inventory, and disposal of items found at any location throughout the campus. It promotes the return of lost or mislaid property to the owner and confers on the Office of Public Safety the authority to take custody and make final disposition of found articles that remain unclaimed.

We generally interpret such notice as surprising first and formost reaction ,any person got surprise if his/her valuable items distroyed or lost. Some times we misbehave with the management even we knows the campus terms and conditions also , its a human tendency , proven .
