What lessons fro m group communication theory can you apply to your upcoming Group Proposal Project the rest of the semester?Explanation / Answer
This problem is specific to your situation. So I will answer this with general ideation and citations (as asked) of small group communications and then you can put in your team’s parts in it.
In general, the system theory states that in small group communications, the entities can be categorized according to input, process and output. Here, in this question it has been specified that these entities should be categorized as hierarchy, interdependent parts and feedback. Moreover these parts should be such that we consider these not as a separate team of a group but as a part of a whole structure.
Structuration theory is an explanation of the function of small groups, which is also used in other fields such as accounting, information technology, and management. The theory asserts that norms and rules are the bases of group members’ interactions and they result in outcomes that can affect groups’ internal and external interactions. This concept rests on two key arguments of dualities and a variety of influencing factors, such as members in the group, the group history, etc. Duality asserts group structures, e.g. rules and resources are both medium and outcome of action. Structuration theory helps with explaining organizational behaviors, description of emergence of structures, and discourses and group/institutional practices, norms, and procedures. (Croucher, Stephen, Understanding communication theory, Taylor and francis, 2015)
The major lessons to take away from group communication theory that we can apply in future projects is that small groups are very personally focused and the people in it share the same ideas, values, etc. But its not always necessary that all members have the same view/ solution for a problem. There needs to be open communication about this. From the systems theory we have learned that by defining entities and functions specific to those entities it becomes much effective to complete a job. These “entities” might be independent and may have their own DOA (delegation of authority) but on a whole they must work toward the specific goal of the project. Each of these sub teams is an important part of the whole aim and non-functioning of any of these lead to slowing down of the project.
