Question

The shortcut to figuring out if an athlete or performer is in need of a Sport Psychology Consultant (trained in Exercise & Sport Sciences) or a mental health professional (Licensed Counseling or Clinical Psychologist) is to determine whether the psychological factors that are disrupting performance in sport are also disrupting normal daily functioning. If there is ever any reason to believe an individual’s psychological state is disrupting their ability to adequately function day to day in the “real world”, then you should refer the individual to a licensed mental health professional.

For each of the following cases, identify which type professional is most likely needed.

Be sure to cite the type of training the selected professional would have acquired, and why this training is appropriate for the case.

A tennis player tells you they are having extreme difficulty with their second serve and get very anxious any time they miss on their first serve.

A golfing coach reports one of her athletes has been disengaged for about a month and performance has dropped dramatically. Although the golfing coach is not involved in her players’ personal lives, the coach has overheard other players mentioning this athlete never joins the team in any social activities and no longer jokes around at practice like she once did.

An American Football player’s coach wants you to work with one of his safeties who has recently been getting penalized for unsportsmanlike conduct. The coach mentions that although the player’s newfound aggression on the field has been great for his performance, the safety often loses control of his temper at practice and in games.

Explanation / Answer

Answer-1- According to me, the tennis player should consult to a sport psychology consultant regarding this problem. We deal with anxiety in our life everyday but some stress and anxieties are more stronger and long lasting which never goes away. So. it would be better for the tennis player to take some counselling sessions with a professional sport psychologist to reduce his stress and improve his performance. Sport psychology consultant helps a player to overcome fears like fear of failure or embarrassment. A sport psychologist also helps to reduce general anxiety during a game and prepares an athlete mentally for the competition.

Answer- 2- The athelete needs a mental health professional, a licensed counsellor because she might be in depression due to some professional as well as for some personal reasons. She might be going through some critical mental condition because she has stopped participating in social activities of the team and no longer jokes at practice like she once did.
