We didn't really get into this in the video, but there are adaptive and maladaptive ways to meet the many needs on Maslow's hierarchy. Adaptive means effective and harmless. Maladaptive behaviors are either ineffective or effective but also harmful to oneself or others. Please provide an example of a maladaptive behavior that can be explained in terms of the person attempting to meet one of their needs. Identify which need(s) the person is attempting to meet with this maladaptive behavior and identify a more adaptive way to meet that need

Explanation / Answer

An example of maladaptive needs would be that a person who is in the safety needs level will want to achieve the next level, which is the love and belonging needs. To accomplish this, the person will be desperate and attempt to find a partner whom they could date and may make a hasty decision in committing to someone whom they even don't know. In a situation, where the partner may take some time to decide, the the person may become highly insecure and obsessive of that person. They may start fearing that their partner will leave them and that person may not find a partner again. Further, the person may even start threatening and stalking their partner and may show aggressive behavior toward them. An adaptive way to meet the need is to take time in finding the right partner and get to know them before committing.
