I think that principles and values relate so much to creating ethical organizational culture. Organizational culture is those values, principles, traditions and ways of doing things that characterize the behavior of employees and organization as a whole. Some of those principles and values make the company either ethical or unethical. Leaders suppose to shape culture by what they do, by what they say and by what the organization does. Leaders have to understand if they want their organization to be ethical and care about customers more than about just company‘s profit. If want the company to be honest and fair or be like companies such as Johnson&Johnson, Teva Pharmaceutical, Allergan PLC and etc. “Attorney General Mike DeWine said at a news conference that the companies were dishonest with doctors about their painkillers' risks“. Problem of those companies was that they were unethical because they lied to doctors and only really cared about profit and tried to increase it by doing not the right thing. “The evidence is going to show they knew what they were saying was not true and they did it to increase sales“. During my Small Business Management class I learned that unethical companies are not going to succeed in a long term run. Unethical behavior, decisions or actions can lead to serious problems because some of them might be against the law, illegal or inappropriate. In this case company were selling doctors painkillers that were opioid addictive. Only knowing that anyone can tell that their actions were unethical and can assume that it could lead to investigations and court processes.
Explanation / Answer
I do not agree that overall organisational culture has much to with a company’s ethical values. Whether or not a company chooses to favour ethical decisions over unethical yet profit making ones solely depends upon the key stakeholders and those belonging to the highest positions. How an organisation orients itself and structures its goals is decided upon by the CEO and not the worker. Thus, the personal values and principles of the top decision makers better influence a company’s stance towards ethical acts rather than the overall culture as such.
