Hypnosis: Myth, Magic or Mystery?
This is an EC Discussion worth 5 points, with no credit for cross-posting but feel free to comment on what other students say -- after all, these are called "discussions"
BTW, the student in my Fall class commented on the Get Out with some student saying that the idea of undergoing hypnosis proved to them so scary they would never try.
Let me assure you, from someone who had an extensive background in that area back in the 80s when UCI Medical Center had a Hypnotherapy and Pain Clinic and I had a working relationship with them for years.
Trust me when I say that Get Out has absolutely nothing to do with the use of hypnosis in a therapeutic context that's my story and I'm sticking to it!
What are some of the basic theories surrounding hypnosis. Does anyone have any experiences they would like to share, either personal or about others?
There is so much I could say on this subject that I try to get a feel for what you folks are interested in discussing, so go for it -- the ball's in your court.
Explanation / Answer
Get Out is the kind of movie that when viewed by a person who hasn't had practical experience in the realm of hypnosis, would most definitely be horrified by the picture showcased in the aforesaid move.
But, Hypnosis is veritably quite a different experience and is not nearly, for it is partially, like the one we chance upon the in the movie. To see all the layman literature available with reference to this concept, which are all the fictional books and movies we can see the much apparent allure and mystic that has surrounded this concept and clouded the judgment of manifold people.
Hypnosis is not as it seems, it is actually based on quite a fundamental concept, which is suggestions and the propensity of and individuals suggestive behavior, and how readily one excepts suggestions.
In an instance, that might be an oversimplification, but makes it easier to understand, A person according to the big five model of personality, who is is high on Neuroticism would be tougher to put under the influence of Hypnosis, whereas, a person high on openness would be relatively easier to suggest. These practices are most prolifically used fro therapeutic purposes and this is done so by another fundamental premise of hypnosis which is connecting one with oneself.
I am a hypnotherapist myself, and I have had an interesting case of one of my clients who had lost her father to a disease, and she had quite a few unresolved issue with him, which I would not dwell into for their lengthy nature, but the crux of it was, her father had severely impacted her relations with the opposite sex. No, this wasn't a case of sexual assault, just sundry classic misunderstandings between a father and his daughter.
She was made to connect with him in the form of the image of her father that she held best representative of him and his behavior, and from there on made to deal with him and break through the actual image and forgiveness. Not today, she is comparatively better now and on the road to a better understanding of herself and her father, and hence her personal relationships.
