W.E.B. Du Bois acted as a trailblazer for sociology in the United States- mainly through the race-conflict theory. He aided in shedding light on racial division within the United States in the early 1900s, commenting that although white people get to be "Americans" exclusively, African Americans have to live a "double consciousness". Additionally, Du Bois studied the strengths and weaknesses of the African American community in The Philadelphia Negro: A Social Study and founded the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP). If Du Bois were alive today, I think that he would be pleased with how far we have come as a society but also disappointed in how far we have yet to go in order to eradicate racial discrimination in America. We have done away with the obviously egregious discriminatory acts against people of differing ethnic backgrounds, but we still need to tackle the underlying stereotyping and general uneasiness we associate with variant cultures.
