The dependent variable here is the reading score obtained by a child in third grade.

The independent variables are "type of pre school attended by the children". The levels of which are "Independent PreSchool","District Provided PreSchool" "No outside Preschool".

Ex-post facto research means studying a variable which is out of control of experimenters hand.Here one such variable is present i.e." type of pre school attended by a child" this cannot be controlled by the expreimenter.Moreover Ex-post facto research extends to studying how this "uncontrolled variable" affects the dependent variable (in our case which is reading score). On the other hand correlational research deals with the situation where relationship 2 or more quantitative variable is under consideration. Precisely this is not the case here since our independent variable is categorical.
