Question

Please read the following scriptures:
Proverbs 10:4,
Lazy hands make for poverty,
    but diligent hands bring wealth.

13:22;
A good person leaves an inheritance for their children's children, but a sinner's wealth is stored up for the righteous.

Luke 12:16-21,

6 And he told them this parable: “The ground of a certain rich man yielded an abundant harvest. 17 He thought to himself, ‘What shall I do? I have no place to store my crops.’

18 “Then he said, ‘This is what I’ll do. I will tear down my barns and build bigger ones, and there I will store my surplus grain. 19 And I’ll say to myself, “You have plenty of grain laid up for many years. Take life easy; eat, drink and be merry.”’

20 “But God said to him, ‘You fool! This very night your life will be demanded from you. Then who will get what you have prepared for yourself?’
21 “This is how it will be with whoever stores up things for themselves but is not rich toward God.”

14:28,

For which of you, desiring to build a tower, does not first sit down and count the cost, whether he has enough to complete it?

16:13;

No one can serve two masters. Either you will hate the one and love the other , or you will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot.

James 2:5-6;

Listen, my dear brothers and sisters.Has not God chosen those who are poor in the eyes of the world to be rich in faith and to inherit the kingdom he promised those who love him?But you have dishonored the poor. Is it not the rich who are exploiting you? Are they not the ones who are dragging you into court?

nor did we eat anyone’s food without paying for it. On the contrary, we worked night and day, laboring and toiling so that we would not be a burden to any of you.9 We did this, not because we do not have the right to such help, but in order to offer ourselves as a model for you to imitate. 10 For even when we were with you, we gave you this rule: “The one who is unwilling to work shall not eat.

During this week we studied the concept of time value of money.  Many of the applications associated with this concept are with regards to saving for a future event or expense.  For example, we consider how much needs to be set aside for college expenses, auto purchase, or retirement.  In these cases we are accumulating wealth to be used at a future date or to be given to our heirs.

Using the scriptures above (and others that you may consider), give consideration to the following questions in your discussion post:

Is the accumulation of wealth for future use supported by scripture?  Why or why not?How should Christians prepare for the future? What is the relationship between trusting God for His provision and planning for the future?What are the spiritual dangers of accumulating wealth?What are the personal and societal financial implications of the position you have taken in the previous questions?

Explanation / Answer

Based on the statements given in the scripture, it is evident that accumulation of wealth is not a healthy practice and is clearly not supported in the scriptures given. Accumulation of wealth is not a good practice since it makes the poor more poor and rich even more richer.

Followers of Chirst are expected to give or distribute their wealth to the needy ones or to the ones those who dont have. The act of charity will bring in some value and meaning to their life. According to the scriptures there are two masters for every individual and they will be in a position wherein the they will not be able to serve both the masters at the same time. Hence when God gives some provision, the individuals will have to make sure that they give it to the needy since every individual on this earth leads an uncertain life.

Those who accumulate wealth according to God are the ones who exploit the poor and make their life even more uncertain.
