Question

Note: The following is not a hypothesis test, but rather a question requiring a worded response. There is no significance level given, but you need to decide whether or not the evidence supports or does not support rejecting the null. Explain why.

7. A manufacturer claims that the mean weight of flour in its 32- ounce bags is 32.1 ounces. A z-test is performed to determine whether the mean weight is actually less than this. The hypotheses are as follows:

      H0: m > 32.1

        Ha: m < 32.1

The mean weight for a sample of 45 bags of flour was 30.7 oz. Suppose that the

P-value corresponding to this sample data is .0002 Give an interpretation of the

P-value.   Does it seem reasonable (even without a significance level to compare it to) to say that the evidence is strong enough to reject the null hypothesis? Explain the reasoning of your conclusion.

Explanation / Answer

The p value is given as 0.0002.

p value is less than 0.01, 0.05 and 0.1

Hence for 5% or 1% or 10% significance levels reject null hypothesis.

When p < alpha, we reject null hypothesis.

When p value < alpha, there is only 0.002 prob for null hypothesis to be true.

Hence it is wise to reject null hypothesis.

Also when p value is very less, type I error is also less.
