Question

The academic research office at a large community college wants to see wether the distribution of courses chosen (Humanities, Social Science, or Science) is different for its residential and non residential students. It assembles last semester's data and performs a test.

What type of test should they use: chi-square goodness-of-fit test, chi-square test of independence, chi-square test of homogeneity, use some other stat test because the counts are not independent or use some other stat test because at least one of Residential Status and Course Type is quantitive.

Explanation / Answer

Chi-square test of Homogeneity. We have two samples (residential and non-residential students), and one variable, courses. We want to see if the distribution of courses is the same for the two groups.
