Question

can you please help me to select a topic for the proposal (see the example and details)

Topic :

Audience: Dean of students

Benefit to Audience:

Logos:

Ethos:

Pathos:

Your Major: construction engineering technology and management

How this topic relates to your major:

Here the example

Example: Topic: Subway in the Atrium

Audience: Dean of students

Benefit to Audience: Potential students would rave about our sandwich options, increasing number of students; income generated could be reinvested into the school

Logos: We have a problem of not enough tasty lunch options. Building a Subway in the Atrium would help solve that problem. Students would enjoy being on campus, talk about Subway to their friends, attract more students, enjoy sandwiches, spend money, etc.

Ethos: Studies about Subway’s appeal to our age-group, surveys of food on campuses, etc.

Pathos: Story/personal interview about a student frustrated by dining options

Your Major: Business Administration

How this topic relates to your major: Launching a Subway is a business process.

Here the instruction

Topics: The first step is to select a proposal topic.

Topics must:

• Relate to your major;

• Be theoretically doable by you in one semester (ex.: designing a preliminary draft of a plan to build a bridge over Ten Mile is doable, actually building that bridge is not);

• Make the world a better place, no matter how small scale;

• Have a demonstrable benefit to your specific audience (your audience is someone who would have the money and authority to approve your idea).

Banned topics: The following topics are fine ideas that I have heard a few times, and I need a break from anyone proposing: Bridge over/tunnel under 10 Mile, athletes living off-campus, Blue Devil Dollars, internet in Housing, door lock systems, parking lots or structures, water fountains, RFOC, swim team, Field House, hockey arena, outlets in Atrium, composting.

Assumptions: Assume that your audience has come to you, a student intern or entrepreneur, asking you to create this proposal.

Explanation / Answer

Topic : Drafting a plan to upgrade the computer center building to make it a green building and undertaking project costing for the same.

Audience: Dean of students

Benefit to Audience: A green building would help save enormous costs in terms of energy spent and the amount saved can be used for the welfare of students through different activities.

Logos: The computer center consumes a lot of energy because of the server farm and other IT infrastructure. It is the biggest consumer of energy in the campus. A revamp of that would signal to the students to undertake small initiative to conserve energy and become more responsible citizens.

Ethos: Study about the potential energy savings can be intellectually stimulating and also throw light on the pattern of energy consumption in everyone’s lives.

Pathos:A detailed analysis about the total energy consumed in a typical day, the pattern throughout the day with peak & off peak hours and the carbon footprint in a year.

Your Major: construction engineering technology and management

How this topic relates to your major: An analysis and revamp of a building to make it more energy efficient is aligned to my interests of making sustainable building designs, which is a demand of the future.
