Explanation / Answer

1. The Affiliative Style-

An affiliative leader ensures that there is harmony in the team and well-versed in resolving conflict among the team members. Personally speaking, in my workplace I had a Team Manager who had this affiliative leadership style. She was very friendly at the same time ensures that the work has been done by the team members. When I my fellow colleague teased me which was very insulting, I showed my emotion of anger upfront before all my team members. My Team Manager personally told me about the consequences of my behavior and explained the same to my colleague. There was harmony and better understanding among my team members.

2. The Authoritative Style-

This leadership style is when the leader does not involve the subordinates for any of decisions. The leader dictates the goals, policies and procedures and controls all the activities of the team members. When I was shifted to a different team, the Team Manager followed this authoritative style. She was literally with a ‘stick’ when an assignment was given to the team members. I was not allowed to take a freestyle judgment as in my previous team, instead my activities were controlled by my Team Manager.

3. The Coaching Style-

The leaders coach the team members to enhance their skills and guide them to achieve the desired goals. This leadership style is very effective when the team member is responsible, experienced and committed. The Team Manager provided guidance to achieve my aspiration of becoming a Team Leader.

4. The Coercive Style-

This leadership style states that the leader demands immediate compliance for their orders and dictation. This leadership style makes the subordinates to be more stressed in the workplace. One of the Team Managers wanted the task to be done as soon as she dictates that. She gave a problem solving task through A3 which was time consuming. The TM wants the problem to be solved immediately procrastinating other work.

5. The Democratic Style-

This leadership is also known as participative leadership or shared leadership. This style states that the team members are more participative in the decision making process. My previous Team Manager in the publishing company, gave our team members more authority to voice out our opinions during any decision making process.

6. The Pacesetting Style-

In this leadership style, the leader sets very high performance standards both for themselves and to the team members. The leader is the role model for the team members. The Team Manager was so effective in her role, that she became the role model for me. I wanted to enhance my people management skills as depicted by my Team Manager.

7. Servant Leadership Style-

In this style, the servant is the first in the priority. The servant has to be served first. In this style, the leader puts the needs of others first before considering theirs. They help leaders to develop and perform to high standards by providing guidance to them. My Team Manager put my needs first before taking a decision. I wanted to be a member of the rewards committee however my Team Manager wanted my colleague to become the member since he was well versed in those policies. My TM helped me to become the member of the rewards committee which helped a great deal in developing my career in the publishing company.
