Explanation / Answer

It has been reported by many that yoga practices help in reducing symptoms of depression. It has found to increase positive feelings and decrease negative ones in non-depressed people as well. However, there is very little scientific research and findings on exactly how this happens.

In previous studies conducted on whether yoga has an uplifiting effect on the mood, all forms of yoga were used and thus it has been impossible to determine whether the positive results are due to the specific physical yoga postures(Asanas) or some other methods, or could even e due to the effect of the specific yoga teacher.

Thus in this study, the specific teachings of BKS Iyengar were thought to be especially effective in controlling the effects of depression. Here, these asanas were taught to mildly depressed adults over a period of 5 weeks, which included asanas that open and lift the chest,, back bends, inversions and vigorous standing poses.

This, it was hypothesised that those who went through this 5 week yoga course, would expereicne significantly less sel-reported symptoms of depression and would also experience a more positive mood as opposed to the control group. Also, since depression and anxiety seem to go hand in hand, it was though ttthat a reduction in symptoms of depression would also result in less trait anxiety, accompanied by less fatigue.
