Life tables and survivorship curves. Suppose 250% individulas of spiders Apopyllus now wre hatched at the same time and tracked over a period of six months, with each death being recorded. Numbers of remaning individuals at each month are recorded in th second column of the below table:

a) Fill in th rest of the life table.

b) Produce a survivorship curve.

c) What is the type of survivorship curve?

Time(months) at beginning of interval Number remaning at beginning of interval, nx Proportion of original animals surviving to beginning of inteval, lx Proporitoin of original animsl dying during interval, dx Mortality rate, qx 0 250 1 200 2 150 3 68 4 53 5 6 6 0

Explanation / Answer

a. For the rest of the tabe, we use the formula:

lx = nx / 250

dx = (lx- lx+1) / 250

qx = dx / lx

So, the table is completed as:

b. Survivorship curve: lx v/s time

c. This is a type II survivorship curve. (Songbirds type) as it is linearly decreasing.

Time(months) at beginning of interval Number remaning at beginning of interval, nx Proportion of original animals surviving to beginning of inteval, lx Proporitoin of original animsl dying during interval, dx Mortality rate, qx 0 250 1 50 0.20 1 200 0.80 50 0.25 2 150 0.60 82 0.5467 3 68 0.272 15 0.2206 4 53 0.212 47 0.8868 5 6 0.024 6 1 6 0 0
