1.) Consider the circuit in the drawing. (R1 = 5.0 ?, R2 = 24 ?, V1 = 35.0 V.)

(a) Determine the magnitude of the current in the circuit.
A

(b) Determine the magnitude of the voltage between the points labeled A and B.
V

(c) Select which point, A or B, is at the higher potential.

point A point B

2.) The drawing shows a portion of a larger circuit. Current flows left to right in each resistor. What is the current in the resistor R? (Let R1 = 2.93 ?, R2 = 4.44 ?, and I1 = 3.24 A.)
A

3.) Using Kirchhoff's loop rule, find the value of the current I in part (c) of the drawing, where R = 3.4 ?.
I =

Explanation / Answer

1.) V = V1 - 10 = 35 - 10 = 25 V

Req = R1 + R2 + 8 + 12 = 5 + 24 + 20 = 49 ohms

a.) I = V/Req = 25/49 = 0.51 A

b.) VA + V1 - iR2 = VB

So VA-VB = iR2 - V1 = (25/49)*24 - 35 = -22.755 V

c.) Since VA - VB is negative, Point B is at higher potential

2.) Let the current in R be 'I'

I1 = (R2/(R1+R2)*I

So I = (R1+R2)*I1/R2 = (2.93+4.44)*3.24/4.44 = 5.378 A

3.) 36 - (I)(3) - 12 - (I)(4) - (I)(3.4) = 0

So I(3+4+3.4) = 24

So I = 30/13 = 2.3077 A
