Question

A study was done on the batting averages for two baseball players: Hitmore and Bunter. Data were collected over a period of time for baseball parks that are natural and artificial turf. It was found that Hitmore does better overall (.e., has a better batting average). However, for both natural and artificial turf separately, Bunter does better. Which of the following is correct? O This is an example of a negative association between variables. O This is an example of Simpson's Paradox. O "Turf" is a lurking variable in this example O Both (B) and (C) are correct O This situation is mathematically impossible

Explanation / Answer

Here' the answer with explanation. I have reasoned out the answer too. Please don't hesitate to give a "thumbs up" in case you're happy with the answer.

Answer: This situation is mathematically impossible.

If Hitmore has better averages in each of the 2 turfs then in at overall too he will will have a better batting average than Bunter'. A Simpson' Paradox would have been the answer if one of turf' average for Bunter is more than Hitmore' while the oveerall average is more for Hitmore.

Hence, last option is RIGHT
