Bad Statistical Study
A toothpaste company claims that about 80% of the dentists recommend their toothpaste for patients. A toothpaste company draw this conclusion based on the data collected from the dentists. For this study, the population is considered as the all dentists in the state. Out of all these doctors, company sampled some doctors and draw this conclusion; but in fact the procedure of sampling used is not proper. Company used the sample of favoured doctors only. So, this sampling process is not completely random process. Also, company used very small sample size as compared to the population size and therefore there is no any guarantee to get unbiased results or estimates. So, these types of studies contain sampling bias, selection bias, and other types of biases. So, estimates based on these types of studies are not perfect and we cannot apply or use these estimates for taking judgement about entire population. Also, we see so many political polls on different channels and due to small sample size we cannot believe these surveys completely.
Good Statistical Study
A government agency estimates the average income of the persons in the particular state. For this study government agency use the large data for the calculation of the average income of the persons in the particular state. For this study, the population under considerations is all persons in the state. For this study, government agency use as much possible as large data and that’s why estimates are more unbiased and useful for further estimation. We know that the large samples gives the more reliable and unbiased results for the population parameters. For this research study, most of the data from the records of different companies, agencies, organizations, etc. is used for finding the estimate for average salary. So, we can believe these types of estimates.
