Question

It has been claimed that 10.4% of adults who celebrate Halloween get inspiration for Halloween costumes from Instagram. You believe this claimed value is on the low side and the true population parameter is larger than this claimed value. You survey a random sample of 325 adults who plan to celebrate Halloween, and you find that 46 of them reported getting costume inspiration from Instagram.

Use the information above to conduct the appropriate hypothesis test by going through the steps we discussed in lecture. Assume the alpha level is .05 (or 5%). Fill in the following table with your answers, and be sure to show all your work.

1) What are the hypotheses?

Ho:

Ha:

2) What is the test statistic? Please compute this value and show us or explain your calculations along the way.

3)What is the p-value in this example? Please give us that specific value.

4)What is your decision and why?

Explanation / Answer

1) Ho: p<=0.104

Ha: p>0.104

2) here n=325

therefore std error =(p(1-p)/n)1/2 =0.0169

sample proportion phat =46/325 =0.1415

therefore test statistic z=(phat-p)/std error =(0.1415-0.104)/0.0169 =2.217

3) for above test statsitic and right tailed test ; p value =0.0133

4)as p value is less then 0.05 level ; tehrefore we reject null hypothesis.

we have sufficient evidenc to conclude that  true population parameter is larger than this claimed value.
