Give some practical uses of knowing variation. A few thoughts: You are traveling to a job interview; what clothes do you need to pack for a trip? Doctors need to know distributions of blood values to know whether a patient is out of range; industrial engineers need to know distributions, for example the strength of a certain part to see if there is a problem with a manufacturing machine; clothing manufacturers need to know the distribution of sizes, for example children’s clothes for a certain age.

Practical uses of variation:

(1) The teacher can find from the marks obtained by the students of the class, whether there is considearble variation in marks. If the marks are consistent, he can continue his teaching for the entire class. But, if there is considerable variation, he can seggregate the weaker students for more intensive coaching.

(2) In a manufacturing industry, it is manetor that variation in critical parameters like weight, radius etc, are allowed to vary within a specied tolerance. In case thevariation becomes more, the production should be stopped and aftr making necessary correction only, the production should continue. Otherwise. at a later stage, we have face severe quality problem.

(3) policy makers of a state should see that the variation of income is within limits. If the varaition between the poor and the rich is very large, it is very difficult to make a common acceptable policy.

(4) In army, the variation of the person's height and weight is to be maintained within limits at all times, by taking BMI (Body Mass Index) periodically.
