Question

3. A researcher wants to estimate the mean amount of money that teachers spend out of their own pocket for school supplies. For each sample described below, explain whether or not the sample could be used draw a conclusion about all teachers. a) A sample of 30 teachers all from the same private school in an affluent neighborhood. b) A randomly selected sample of 100 teachers with a shape that is fairly symmetric, mean of $75 standard deviation of $25, and one outlier at $250 c) A randomly selected sample of 10 teachers with a shape that is fairly symmetric, mean of $75 standard deviation of $25, and one outlier at $250.

Explanation / Answer

The researcher wants to draw a conclusion about all teachers from the sample.

(a) sample of 30 from the sample private school would provide a good estimate of the spending trend of the affluent neighbourhood it belongs to. It won't give a general estimate of all the teachers.

(b) This would give a moderately good estimate but the effect of the outlier would be somewhat adjusted by the large sample size.

(c) This won't give a good estimate because the outlier will overrule any estimate from the sample of such small size of 10.
