Question
3. A researcher wants to estimate the mean amount of money that teachers spend out of their own pocket for school supplies. For each sample described below, explain whether or not the sample could be used to draw a conclusion about all teachers. a) A sample of 30 teachers all from the same private school in an affluent neighborhood. b) A randomly selected sample of 100 teachers with a shape that is fairly symmetric, mean of s75, standard deviation of $25, and one outlier at $250 c) A randomly selected sample of 10 teachers with a shape that is fairly symmetric, mean of $75, standard deviation of $25, and one outlier at $250. 4. For each of the following studies, state whether the data are independent samples from two populations or matched pairs. a) A group of 50 students measured the lengths of their right arm and their left arm pa b) A group of 35 television viewers had their blood pressure measured before and after watching a movie containing violence. A group of 100 volunteers were randomly assigned to receive vitamin C or a placebo. The groups were followed for 4 weeks and the number of cold symptoms were compared. d)Explanation / Answer
Q4 :
Independent sample : In which study we have to compare the two samples using there mean . Independent samples have different objects .
Matched paired sample : The sample in which we hav data for after and before for same object is matched paird sample .
a) In this question we have given sample of 50 students and we have to measure of their right arm and left arm
Here objects are same , and we have given observations for same object . So it is matchd paired sample.
b) In this question we have to measure blood pressure before and after watching a movie .
Here our sample is same , and we have to take observation before watching movie and after watching moive
That is matched paired sample.
c ) In this question we have given 100 samples and we have to compare symptoms vitamin C and Placebo .
That is there are different samples for each treatment , which is independent .
So this is independent sample .
