Question

Which statistical test should I use to test my hypothesis? I'm using the General Social Survey from 2014 to test my hypothesis which is that the higher the level of education (independent variable) one attains, the likelier it is for them to have liberal preferences (dependent variable). I recoded education level from 1(less than highschool) to 5 (graduate degree) and the political views from 1(conservative) to 3 (liberal). Is the dependent variable ordinal and the independent variable dichotomous? If so, does that mean I should use a z-test? I'm really confused...

Explanation / Answer

Both independent and dependent variables are have ordinal dataaaaaa, in this case you can use either Z test for population proportion or non parametric tests like, Spearmen's Rank Correlation and Mann Whitney U test.
