Question

Which statistical tests do I use to compare the variables in this question? The first variable is continuous, General Health is categorical, the two age groups are categorical.

Consider the number of minutes per week of at least moderate intensity exercise (WeeklyMinutesModerateExercise) as a continuous variable. Is the average number of minutes of moderate exercise per week different between self reported general health categories (GeneralHealth)? Is this relationship the same for the two age groups ‘less than 45’ and ‘45+’?

Explanation / Answer

Solution

For convenience of explanation and understanding, let us assume

1. we have k categories of The General Health

2 we have the number of minutes per week of at least moderate intensity exercise (WeeklyMinutesModerateExercise) for all the subjects under study separately for each of the k categories assumed in (1)

3. we have the number of minutes per week of at least moderate intensity exercise (WeeklyMinutesModerateExercise) for all the subjects under study separately for the two age groups.

Then, to test if number of minutes per week of moderate exercise per week is different for general health categories, an ANOVA One-way Classification (Completely Randomised Design) would be most appropriate. Here, the “treatment’ will be general health categories and response variable will be number of minutes per week of moderate exercise per week.

For the age-group-wise comparison, since there are only two categories, a 2-sample t-test would do. Test the average of number of minutes per week of moderate exercise per week for younger (< 45) group against the average of number of minutes per week of moderate exercise per week for older (45 +) group.
