Question

You want to determine if introducing a video in the waiting area will help relax patients. This study has taken place over 2 days. In the first day, Group 1 (the control group) will experience the waiting room as is (monitor off). On the second day, Group 2 will have a classic movie playing. The nurse will anonymously copy their pulse rate and record the data. You have conducted the t test and obtained the following results: • Pretest checklist examined the following criteria: o Both groups show symmetrical normal curve o Test of Homogeneity of Variances produced the following table Pulse Levene’s statistics Df1 Df2 Sig 0.405 1 70 0.526 o Descriptive table produced the following statistics Pulse N Mean SD Control 35 99.83 8.542 Classic movie 37 95.68 9.357 Total 72 97.69 9.149 o Your T test produced the following results (The ANOVA-One Way produces the same result as t test-see the video 05) Sum of square df Mean squares F sig Between groups 310.198 1 310.198 3.855 0.165 Within groups 5633.080 70 80.473 Total 5943.278 71 Write an abstract and respond the following questions: a. Identify the variable characteristics in this study (variable names and types of the variables)? b. Write the hypothesis HO and H1 c. Describe whether the pretest checklist criteria are satisfied d. Discuss the t test results, hypothesis resolution, and implication of these findings (e.g., will introduction of classic video in the waiting area help to relax patients?).

Explanation / Answer

(A) Here the independent variable is "The visual presented to patients" that can be "the aforesaid video" (the control group) and " the classic movie" (the experimental group). The type of variable is categorical variable.

Dependent variable is "Pulse rate of the patient" . The type of variable is ratio/ interval.

(B) H0: There is no significant impact of the said video on the relaxing behavior of patients. control= placebo

Ha : there is significant positive impact of the said video on the relaxing behavior of patients. control>  placebo

(c) Here checklist is

(i) The data is normal here.

(ii) A simple random sampling has been performed here.

(iii) Variance of the samples shall not be very high.

(iv) Homogeneity of variance shall be there.

(d) Here t test results are

pooled standard deviation sp = sqrt [(n1 -1)s12 + (n2 -1)s22 }/ (n1 + n2 -2)] = sqrt[ (34 * 8.5422 + 36 * 9.3572)/70] = 8.97

t = (99.83 - 95.68)/ [8.97 * sqrt(1/35 + 1/37)]

t = 4.15/ 2.115 = 1.962

so critical value of t for dF = 70 and alpha = 0.05

tcr = 1.667

so t > tcritical so we shall reject the null hypothesis and can conclude we will introduce the classic video in waiting area to help to relax patients.
