Question
Your 12 9.4.003. The systolilc blood pressure of individuals is thought to be related to both age and weight. For a random sample of 11 men, the following x3 143 153 162 154 168 137 149 159 128 184 194 211 196 220 67 73 74 188 207 167 217 65 ding the mean and standard deviation of each variable. Compute the coefficient of variation for each variable. (Use 2 decimal places.) CV Relative to its mean, which variable has the greatest spread of data values? Which variable has the smallest spread of data values relative to its mean? MiExplanation / Answer
(a) Using the standard formula for mean, standard deviation and coefficient of variation, we have the following results:
The spreads of the 3 variables can be calculated by subtracting the mean from the values and the results are as below:
Ww can see that x3 has the maximum spread of 28 and x2 has the minimum spread of 16.45. So option 3 is correct.
(b) The correlation results are as shown below:
We can see that x1 and x2 are strongly correlated. The 4th option is correct.
The values of r2 explain the percentage variations. So we can conclude that 95.78% of the variation in x1 can be explained by the variation in x2. Similarly, 94.2% of variation in x1 can be explained by the variation in x3.
