Suppose you were conducting a survey to determine what portion of voters in your town support a particular candidate for mayor. Consider each of the following methods for sampling the voting population of your town. State whether each is likely to produce a representative sample and explain your reasoning. 6-25. a. Call one number from each page of the phone book between noon and 2 p.m. b. Survey each person leaving a local grocery store. c. Survey each person leaving a local movie theater. d. Walk around downtown and survey every fourth person you see. e. Could you make a representative sample by surveying a few people from each of the situations described in parts (a) through (d) above? Explain

Explanation / Answer

We cannot make a representative sample from any of the 4 methods.

REASON:
(a) In making calling one number from each page of phone book: We are ignoring the portion of population whose phones are not listed in the phone book. Also, since the timing is from noon and 2 pm, many people will be in office and may not respond.

(b) Surveying at grocery shop, our sample will restricted to the customers of that particular shop. We are ignoring the portion of people whio are not customers of that shop. Also manypeople may not respond since their primary interest will be in shopping and not in answering survey uestions.

(c) Surveying movie theatre: We are ignoring portion of population who do not see movie in theatre.

(d) Surveying in downtown: We are ignoring the portion of population who use their vehicles like car, scooter etc.

Thus, all the 4 situations above are inappropriate for sampling the voting population of our town.

One of the appropriate methods is given below:

Step 1:

For given population size N, calculate statistically accurate sample size n

Step 2:

List all the eligible voters with serial numbers.

Step 3:
Through random number generator, obtain n random numbers

Step 4:
Survey those people with those random numbers from the list already prepared.
