13. You have 18 cookies in a bhox-5 are oatmeal, 4 are sugar, 3 are peanut butter, and 6 are butter. Show yorur calculations in answering the questions. Suppose you randomly choose a cookie, replace it, and randomly choose another. What is the probability that either the first cookie is butter or the second is oatmeal? b. Suppose instead that you randomly choose a cookie, but you do not replace it. You then randomly choose another. What is the probability that either the first cookie is butter or the second cookie is oatmeal. C, Find the probability. You roll a number cube and flip a coin that results in the number I and heads up.

Explanation / Answer

13. a. There are 18 cookies - 5 oatmeal, 4 sugar, 3 peanut butter and 6 butter.

Probability that the first cookie is butter = 6/18.

Probability that the second cookie is oatmeal = 5/18.

Probability that the first is butter and the second is oatmeal = 6/18 * 5/18.

=> Probability that the first is butter or the second is oatmeal = 6/18 + 5/18 - 6/18 * 5/18 = 0.5185.

13. a. There are 18 cookies - 5 oatmeal, 4 sugar, 3 peanut butter and 6 butter.

Probability that the first cookie is butter = 6/18.

Since the cookie is not replaced, there are 17 cookies left after the first selection.

Probability that the second cookie is oatmeal = 5/17.

Probability that the first is butter and the second is oatmeal = 6/18 * 5/17.

=> Probability that the first is butter or the second is oatmeal = 6/18 + 5/17 - 6/18 * 5/17 = 0.5294.

c. The probability that the number 1 shows up = 1/6.

The probability that heads shows up = 1/2.

=> The probability that number 1 and heads show up = 1/6 * 1/2 = 1/12 = 0.0833.
