Question

The answer is probably somewhere in between. It's certainly relevant, but Cuckier seems to stake humanity's future on it. For example, at the video's beginning he seems to imply that big data is the only solution to many of society's problems, including poverty and famine, and if these problems are not solved we are doomed. That's overstating the case. World-wide famine and poverty have decreased dramatically over the past 100 years, and much of this occurred outside the era of big data. Even with the poverty reductions in the third-world over the past thirty years, it is hard to make the case that these were dependent on big data Cuckier mentioned some major areas where big data can drastically improve lives cancer research and self-driving cars - but much of life falls outside of areas where big data can have a paradigm changing impact. It will change many areas of life at the margins, no doubt, but the changes won't be revolutionary. My marriage, for example, will look and feel largely the same. So I guess I am in the middle. Big data is relevant (that's why I'm in this program), but it won't

Explanation / Answer

I agree to your point that it is overstating the benifits of Big data. Poverty and famine like issues can be solved locally also while working on a small amount of data . Also , not all day-to-day problems can be solved using big data.

Thus, it is relevant but not not the ultimate solution to all the problems of the world.
