Question
1. True or false: In direct current (DC), the electric charge (current) only flows in one direction. Electric charge in alternating current (AC), on the other hand, changes direction periodically. The voltage in AC circuits also periodically reverses because the current changes direction.
2. True or false: A capacitor stores energy for ½ a cycle and gives it up on the other half, the net energy is zero.
3. True or false: A resistor dissipates power equal to the current squared times the resistance.
4. Utilizing your understanding of Electrical Quantities and Definitions. Consider a set of wires that are looped together in a circular coil of radius 2mm and a total flux density of 4T.
a. What is the associated current produced by the coil?
b. What is the resistance associated with this current through a 3m long copper 0.5m diameter copper wire?
c. What is the average power produced in Watts?
5. If an AC (R-C series) circuit discussed in the previous question had a 100-volt voltage source with the voltage phasor lagging 45? behind the current.
a) What is the current in ohms?
4? R1 10? R4 5 V R2 4? R5 Ra R3 8?Explanation / Answer
Answer :- 1) TRUE, DC current flows in one direction only. AC current flow changes direction aftef each half cycle.
Answer :- 2) TRUE, in case of AC circuit.
Answer :- 3) TRUE, Power for a resistor with current I flowing is = P = I2R.
Answer :- a) The two 4 ohm resistors are in parallel. Thus equivalent is 2 ohm. This 2 ohm and R4 are in series, so giving equivalent of 12 ohm. Again R2 and R3 is in series and giving 12 ohm which is parallel to the 12 ohm of R4 and all. Thus giving equivalent of 6 ohm. This 6 is in series with R1, giving 10 ohm. So the total current is 0.5 A.
This 0.5A gets divided equally for two 12 ohm resistances. And then we have 0.25A of current which again gets divided equally for two 4 ohm reisistors. So the current in the resistors is-
R1 = 0.5 A
R2 =R3 = 0.25 A
R4 = 0.25 A
R5 = Ra = 0.125 A.
