Question
1.A flat square plate with 3 ft sides and negligible thickness is submerged horizontally in a liquid. Find the force and pressure on a surface of the plate if
a) the liquid is water and the plate is at a depth of 5 ft.
b) the liquid has density 40lb/ft and the plate is at a depth of 10 ft.
2. The face of a dam is a vertical rectangle of height 10 ft and width 20 ft. Find the total fluid force exerted on the face when the water surface is level with the top of the dam.
3. A fessel has the shape obtained by revolving about the y=axis the part of the parabola y = 2(x^2-4) lying below the x-axis. If x and y are in feet, how much work is required to pump all the water in the full vessel to a point 4 ft above its top?

Explanation / Answer
1) density of water is 1gm/ml or 1000kg/m^3
So using pressure = density*g*height we get p= 1000*10*1.5 (5 ft= 1.5 m) or p =15000 kg/m s^2
force = p/area or F= 15000/0.912^2=18304 N
now density is 40lb/ft or 640.73 kg/m^3 thereofre p = 640.73*10*3.04 (1 ft= .304 m)
p=19478.192 kg/m s^2
force F= 19478.192/0.912^2 = 23418.5 N
