Question
Final Exam, Fall 2017 1) Chapter 8 shows a list of many Physical Activities and the Work Intensity (METS) that they take. Remember a MET a certain amount of energy ( 4.184 kilojoules) per mass ( in kilograms) of a person each hour. This works out to one Food Calorie per each kilogram of person each hour a) So, based on the table information, if a person, is walking at a slow pace, less than 3 kilometer/hour, how many METS are they doing? b) If this slow walker weighs 80 kilograms, how many kilojoules will hey use up in one hour of slow walking? c) If this person (80 kg mass) uses up 2,260 activity from the Table 8.2 that would match (within + /-.1 of a MET) this MET use rate?Explanation / Answer
a. The table is not very clearly visible, but from what I can see, METs corresponding to slow walking at less than 3 km/hour =2.0 kilojoules/kg/hour.
b. If the person weighs 80 kg, then in 1 hour, he will consume 80 x 2 x1 = 160 kilojoule
c. MET rate for the person = 2260/80/1.5=18.833 kilojoules/kg/hour.
I couldn't find an activity within 0.1 MET range of 18.83. The nearest MET activity is Forestry (axe chopping) at 17 METs.
