Question
7. Two researchers are studying treatments for bipolar disorder: Maria's hypothesis test led her to conclude that her treatment did not have an effect when, in reality, it did. · Robert's hypothesis test led him to conclude that his treatment had an effect when, in reality, it did not. . What type of error did Maria make? What type of error did Robert make? Who made the more serious error? Explain. How can Robert ensure that he only has a 1% chance of making the same type of a. b. c. error in his next study? 3Explanation / Answer
While we are studying the effectiveness of the treatment for the bipolar disorder disease,
We may consider HO: or the Null Hypothesis to conclude the effectiveness of treatment and HO: or the Alternate Hypothesis to conclude that it is not.
a.
In Maria's case while the Null Hypothesis was true she did not accept it and concluded in favour of the Alternate Hypothesis that the treatment had no effect.
This is a perfect example of Type I Error
b.
In Robert's case he failed to reject the Null Hypothesis while the Alternate Hypothesis is true.
This is a typical example of Type II Error
c.
In this particular instance we may say that Robert's Error is more serious as Maria's conclusion that the treatment had no effect, while it actually did, would eventually lead to more tests and alternate treatment which would establish ultimately the effectiveness of the treatment in the first place. Robert's error would give the patient a false notion of well being which could be fatal.
d.
The probability of Type II error is Beta and (1 - Beta) II medicates the power of the test.
A 1% chance of error implies increasing the power of the test which can only be done by
a. possiblyincreasing the sample size, i.e. conducting the treatment on a larger sample so that it's effect is not completely missed out or
b. by redefining the treatment pattern so that effect is visible even upon a small dosage/application on a short period of time.
