Iwamoto (E3) found that the mean weight of a sample of a particular species of adult female monkey from a certain locality was 8.41 kg. Suppose that a sample of adult females of the same species from another locality yielded the weights shown in Table 2.3. 2.2 Can we conclude that the median weight of the population from which this second sample was drawn is greater than 8.41 kg? Use the one-sample sign test and a 0.05 level of significance. What is the P value for this test? LE 2.3 Weights of female monkeys, kilograms 8.30 9.50 9.60 8.75 8.40 9.10 9.25 9.80 10.05 8.15 10.00 9.60 9.80 9.20 9.30Explanation / Answer
H0 : Meadin M of the sample population = 8.41 kg
Ha : Median M of the sample population M > 8.41 kg
Here we will employ one sample sign test.
Here the number of values less than 8.41 are = 3
Number of samples gratear than 8.41 are = 12
Here N- ~ BIn (n,0.5) so we will calculate the test statistic
The p- value = BIN (N- < 3 ; 15; 0.5) = 0.0176 as it can be calculated by binomial distribtuion table
so here p - vlaue < 0.05 so we shall reject the nul hypothesis and can say that the median value for the given sample population is greater than 8.41 kg.
