Question

6. Suppose when getting ready for school you make the null hypothesis that it is not going to rain. Identify which of the statements below give a type 1 and type 2 error in context and explain how you know. Then. explain which error you would like to protect more strongly against making and how you would set your significance level for evslusting evidence against your null accordingly (a) You take your umbrella to work but don't end up needing to use it because it never rains. (b) You leave your umbrella at home and get rained on walking between classes

Explanation / Answer

a) This case leads TYPE I error

since null hypothesis is decided as 'never rains', it is true, but I take umbrella,

So here reject H0, rejecting H0 when it is true leads TYPE I error

b) This case leads to TYPE II error

since null hypothesis is as 'never rains'

but it is being rained and we decided not to take umbrella, H0 is false

So it is Accept H0 when it is false

I would like to protect strongly Type I error

since it is more serious than Type II error in real time situaltions including this example

in this case taking umbrella is better situation whether rain occurs or not.
