((((((((((((((((( Greetings everyone! I am having some issue with answering a few questions, and I need someone's help. If each question is answered correctly, possitive feedback, comments, as well as points will be given. Below is the question. Thank you for your time and I appreciate teh effort. Cheers!

Q2: Consider a product that is "settled in." Its MTBF distribution has been found to be normal with a mean of 10,000 hours and a standard deviation of 100 hours. What is the probability of a breakdown before 8,000 hours? Before 9,000 hours? Would you prefer a policy of preventive maintenance, or a policy of breakdown maintenance, on this product? Explain your choice. Please note that a good logical explanation is critical in this discussion.

Explanation / Answer

mean = 10000, standard deviation = 100

Now, Z parameter = (X- mean ) / Standard Deviation

Finding Z value at X = 8000,

Z= (8000 - 10000)/100 = -20

from standard normal distribution table, probability of failure before Z = -20 is 0%

Hence, there is almost no probability that breakdown will occur before 8000 hours

Finding Z value at X=9000

Z=(9000-10000)/100 = -10

from normal table, probability of breakdown less than Z = -10 is 0%

Therefore, there is 0% probability that breakdown will occur before 8000 or 9000 hours.

The curve is very steep around the mean of 10000, since the standard deviation is very low. Hence, there is high probability of breakdown around the mean of 10000. SInce the breakdown is almost predictable, a preventive maintenance makes more sense
