Question

1 Wolves, Remember'? In your first TPS report, we learned about researchers studying a pack of timber wolves in Wisconsin. They collected data on the length x, in meters, from nose to tip of tail, and the weight y, in kilograms, of the wolves. A scatterplot of weight versus length revealed a relationship between the two variables described as positive, linear, and strong. The data collected from the wolves were used to create the least-squares estimation y =-16.46 + 35.022. a) Interpret the meaning of the slope of the least-squares regression line in context. b) One wolf in the pack with a length of 1.4 meters had a residual of -9.67 kilograms. What was the weight of the wolf?

Explanation / Answer

a) here slope is 35.02 which reflect that for every 1 meter increase in length from nose to tip of tail ; average weight of wolf increase by 35.02

b) here predicted value at x=1.4 ; yhat =-16.46+35.02*1.4=32.568

as residual =actual value -predicted value

therefore weight of wolf =-9.67+32.568=22.898
