a. A math education professor wants to study whether a new pedagogical strategy for teaching algebraic concepts will yield greater student learning gains than the method that math teachers ordinarily use. At the beginning of school year, he conducts his study at four different middle schools. Students at two of the four middle schools are to receive the new pedagogical strategy (chosen through a coin toss). The professor gives an algebraic concepts test to all the students participating in the study from the four middle schools by administering an algebra test. The new pedagogical strategy is implemented for one full school year. At the end of the school year, the test is again given to all students who participated in the study from all the four schools.
b. The district superintendent is concerned about bullying in Georgia high school in the district. He wants to know how the school climate scores are influenced after conducting a workshop to prevent bullying in that high school. The superintendent requests the school principal to conduct workshops that provide students’ knowledge about bullying and how to prevent it. The first workshop is 1 week long and the second workshop is 2 weeks long. A total of 50 students each from 11th and 12th grade level is selected in a manner so that each student has an equal chance of participating in the workshop. The 11th grade students are assigned to 1-week long workshop and 12th grade students are assigned to 2 weeks long workshop.
c. A mental health researcher is interested in knowing how medical compliance (patients take their medicine properly) of people with schizophrenia is affected by whether they receive social skills training. She selects the patients who visit her clinic to participate in this study. She administers a survey to assess the social skills of her patients before providing the training. She then provides social skills training to all the people in the selected in the study and again administers the survey to the patients.
d. The school superintendent is interested in providing professional development to all the high school arts teacher in the school district during the summer. The superintendent wants to evaluate how the workshop influences their performance scores. Due to limited funding, she selects teachers from 9th grade only. The teachers take a 2-week long summer professional development course in summer 2000. The superintendent collects data on the performance scores of arts teachers who participated in the workshop before and after the training. The workshop is not conducted in summer 2001. The superintendent records the performance scores at the beginning of summer 2001 and after 2 weeks.
