Question

1. Describe the involved parties in the data set presented and the question that you can answer by the data.

2. Discuss why the study exemplifies one that agrees with The American Psychological Association’s (APA) Ethical Principles of Psychologists and Code of Conduct. [This question is open-ended. In answering, you could describe the elements of ethics code the study follows. You could also describe violations the study avoids.]

3. Discuss ethical issues that might arise when you are analyzing and reporting statistical results. [For example, think about not infringing upon an individual’s privacy, or about not wanting the wording you use to lead to unfair or unjust categorization.]

4. Describe one way in which you will ensure your reporting of results will align with the APA ethics code.

Scenario 1 (Child and Adolescent Development) The question was investigated of whether (a) age at which infants start to crawl is related to (b) seasonal temperature six months after birth. "Six months after birth" was targeted as the period in which babies typically first try crawling. For a large sample of babies, (a) time at which crawling actually began and (b) average monthly temperature six months after the birth month were collected. The data are showrn below (also found in the Data Set Scenario 1 Excel file Month Average Age Starting to CraAverage Temperature 6 Month:s After Birth Month (in units Fahrenheit) (weeks) Januar Februar March April Ma June Jul August September October November December 29.84 30.52 29.70 31.84 28.58 31.44 33.64 32.82 33.83 33.35 33.38 32.32 73 72 63 52 39 30 37 48 57 *Adapted from this study: Benson, J. Explanation / Answer

1. Describe the involved parties in the data set presented and the question that you can answer by the data.

The unit of study here are the infants and the event of interest is their time to begin the locomotion/crawling. The goal of the study is to look at the impact of average monthly temperature on the number of infants age who begin crawling. Thus, we can build the regression model on the impact of average monthly temperature on the average crawling age for that month.

2. Discuss why the study exemplifies one that agrees with The American Psychological Association’s (APA) Ethical Principles of Psychologists and Code of Conduct. [This question is open-ended. In answering, you could describe the elements of ethics code the study follows. You could also describe violations the study avoids.]

One reason it exmplifies the agreement with The American Psychological Association's principles is that the study does not collect data at micro level.

3. Discuss ethical issues that might arise when you are analyzing and reporting statistical results. [For example, think about not infringing upon an individual’s privacy, or about not wanting the wording you use to lead to unfair or unjust categorization.]

One of the problems that can be seen with this study is that we have a one-time monthly data. If the data is collected over multiple years, the impact of the average temperature of the month can be more appropriately fit. Also, the infants time to crawl might depend on many other factors such as birth weight, gender, etc. With many significant and intuitive variables missing out, the study might not give accurate results.

4. Describe one way in which you will ensure your reporting of results will align with the APA ethics code

By speifying more details on the method of data collection, the results of the report will align with the APA ethics code.
