Question

How do you know it's positively-skewed? Please explain the work. 24. Suppose that the five-number summary for a data st is as follows: Minimum = 20 Maximum = 50 Median = 30 First Quartile 25 Third Quartile-40 What does this information suggest about the shape of the data distribution? b. c. Data distribution is positively-skewed. Data distribution is symmetric. Data distribution is negatively-skewed. d. The five-number summary does not provide any consistent information regarding the shape of the distribution.

Explanation / Answer

In this case, Median - Q1 = 30 - 25 = 5.

Q3 - Median = 40 - 30 = 10 > 5 = Median - Q1.

So we have few higher values in the right tail and But since, 50% observations lie below median, right tail is longer and so the data distribution is positively skewed. (Ans).
