Question

Three academic toppers in mechanics department of IIT MADRAS conducted an elongation test on smooth elastic body by applying a constant force 'F' on one end by pulling it. Person 'A', pulls it along a smooth floor, person 'B' along a rough surface, but he didn't move the rod, person C along the same surface and produces acceleration. It is also observed that person 'A' also accelerates the rod. The elongation in each cases for persons A, B and C be X, Y and Z. A) X Z C) X = Y = Z D) Data insufficient

Explanation / Answer

Data is insufficient.

X cannnot be greater than Y or Z, because X is actually zero. This is because the person A is pulling the smooth body on a smooth surface, which means friction is absent hence there cannot be any elongation.

Also, Y cannot be zero, because person B is pulling the body against a rough surface and is not moving it, which means static friction is acting in the opposite direction than the applied force and hence there will be some elongation.

More data is needed, because it is not clear what you mean when you say C pulls on the same surface and produces acceleration, because that means that his value of applied force 'F' is different than that of B, which is not clearly mentioned anywhere.

Hope this helps !
