You're working with a computer chip to test the reliability of a next generation of memory chips. Your lab has been tasked to test 10 chips for a total of 1000 hours to determine the Mean Time to Failure (MTTF). During the test, 6 of the chips operated for the entire 1000 hours with no failures. One chip failed at 80 hours, another chip failed at 120 hours and a third chip failed at 160 hours. One other chip failed at 900 hours.
A. Determine the Failure Rate for the memory chips.
B. Determine the MTTF for the memory chips.
C. The engineers of the computer chip company calculate the chips will be used for 2 hours per day, 7 days a week for two years before they need to be replaced. Based on your answers in a. and b. are the engineers correct?
IMPORTANT: MAKE SURE YOU READ THE QUESTIONS CORRECTLY!!! REMEMBER, 6 DID NOT FAIL WHILE 4 FAILED!!!
Explanation / Answer
total number of failures = 4
total working hours = 1000(6) + 80 + 120 + 160 + 900 = 7260 hrs.
Hence, failure rate = 4/7260 failures/hour = 0.000550964187 failures/hour = 5.51 x 10-4 failures/hour
MTTF = (6 * 1000 + 80 + 120 + 160 + 900) / 4 failures = 7260/4 = 1815 hrs.
As MTTF is 1815 hours, if we use it at the rate of 2 hrs/day we can use it safely for approximately 1815/2 = 907 days which is more than 2 years(as proposed by the engineers).
So, we can safely say that calculations of the engineer are correct.
