Question
2. Mr. Smith, a geometry teacher, asks his students to compare and contrast the meanings of the words "congruent" and "similar" on a test. Eunika Vercingetorix,1, one of Mr. Smith's students, writes the following Ttwo polygons are congruent if they have all of the same sides and the same angles. Two polygons are similar if they have all of the same angles. Unlike congruent polygons, similar polygons do not have congruent. But they can't be congruent but not similar What does Ms. Vercingetorix's response get right? What, if anything, does she have wrong? Explain your answers-don't simply say that something is right or wrong without backing up your claim.Explanation / Answer
(1) is wrong.
Corrected : Two polygons are congruent if they have all the same corresponding sides and the same corresponding angles .
(2) is wrong
Corrected : Two polygons are similar if they have all the same corresponding angles and the corresponding sides are proportional
(3) is wrong
Unlike congruent polygons , similar polygons need not have same corresponding sides.
(4) is right , since if corresponding sides are equal implies they are proportional and since corresponding angles are equal , congruency implies similarity , but if corresponding sides are proportional , they may not be equal , hence similarity does not implies congruency.
