Question

Read through these Instructions for Recrystallization (note that you may need to rotate the page to make it legible). Imagine yourself in a lab setting, attempting to use this document to conduct the experiment. How useful would this document be?

Now, offer some revision feedback in one of the following areas:

ACCESSIBILITY/ORGANIZATION (user-orientation, chunking, etc.)

DEFINITIONS AND DESCRIPTIONS

CONTENT (introduction, safety warnings, conclusion, etc.)

SENTENCE STYLE (does it follow conventions?)

Explanation / Answer

The document is really useful and has been written out quite well. Serves as a good lab manual and reads in an interesting way too to get the student to perform the experiment in a meticulous way.

A few points where the document can be improved -

A few prime safety tips can be written first as it would make the student aware of the risks of using a particular chemical, and if certain lab tools are to be used compulsarily to handle hot apparatus.

The experimental procedure seems rather chunked out in one go and will make it difficult for a first timer to follow each step and he/she might miss out on a few intricacies. Dividing each step into points should be great. And withtin the same splitting, one can include the the possible hurdles that will be faced and how to overcome them and a space for the student to write if they came across anything new and how did they improve upon it.

Before the beginning of the procedure all the weights of the compounds can be written that are to be used.

If mock diagrams are there they will help the students visualize the procedure better before-hand

A few viva questions can be added in the end regarding the literature
