Question

001 (part 1 of 2) 10.0 points Young David, who slew Goliath, experi- mented with slings before tackling the gi- ant. He found that with a sling of length 0.517 m, he could revolve the sling at the rate of 10.2 rev/s. If he increased the length to 0.738 m, he could revolve the sling only 7.2 rev/s a) What is the larger of the two linear speeds? Answer in units of m/s 002 (part 2 of 2) 10.0 points b) Using the sling length 0.738 m, what is the centripetal acceleration at 7.2 rev/s? Answer in units of m/s2

Explanation / Answer

According to the given problem,

a) Using the concept of Angular velocity,

v = r

Case-1 , r1 = 0.517m and 1 = 10.2 rev/s = 64.1 rad/s

v1 =  0.517*64.1 rad/s = 33.1 m/s

Case-2 , r2 = 0.738 m and 2 = 7.2 rev/s = 45.24 rad/s

v2 = 0.738*45.24 = 33.4 m/s

v2 is larger of two velocity = 33.4 m/s

b) Using the concept of angular velocity,

v = r

v = 0.738*7.2*2 = 33.4m/s

Now, centripetal accelaration is,

ac = v2/r = 1510.4 m/s2
